Composite membranes of cellulose–mesoporous silica: optimization of membrane fabrication and adsorption capacity

Abstract In this work, we produced composites of mesoporous silica synthesized in-situ on never-dried bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp fibers with the aim providing cost-effective depth filters, having high flux, and adsorptivity. The loading for samples was in range 12–35 wt%. performance double-layer membranes studied adsorption charged molecules. best nanofibrillated cellulose-pulp-mesoporous membrane adsorbed 1160 mg/m 2 methylene blue had a flux 10 L m ?2 h ?1 bar . cellulose layer supported pulp-mesoporous improved adsorptivity filter by controlling flux. showed non-linear-pseudo-first-order kinetics non-linear Freundlich isotherm adsorption. modified metanil yellow adding polyamide amine-epichlorohydrin resin. saturated capacity 9400 without modification polyelectrolyte also 92% 94% heavy metal removal 20 mg Cu 2+ Pb ions, respectively. novel composite membrane, manufactured lower embodied energy fiber, can significantly large-scale production costs due to elimination pre-treatment layer. reusability fifth cycle, after four cycles desorption, 5.2 mg/g, which stabilized from 3rd 5th cycles. This suggests suitability these industrial applications.
